Inappropriate and indecent dressing has been unravelled as the major reason sexual abuse and rape were prevalent on campuses of Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria.
This was the majority submission of
Respondents to the Heart Minders Advancement Initiative and Africa Polling Institute (API)’s survey on Rape and Sexual Abuse in Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria.
Respondents further stated that drug abuse, uncontrollable sex urge, peer pressure, cultism, indiscipline of some students and Lecturer and inadequate security within campuses.
In another related development, cultists and Lecturers have been the major identifiable perpetrators of the dastard act of rape and sexual abuses in Nigerian Tertiary Institutions.
As worst as the issue of rape and sexual abuse are on the Nigerian Tertiary Institution campuses, relevant authorities have handled it with kid gloves.
“It has been perceived that these institutions have shown little or no effort in addressing the issue.
“Sometimes these institutions have rebuffed these cases on the foundation that they all lies and consequently, students who reported such cases are further victimized by the same institutions.”
The Executive Director, Africa Polling Institute (API), Dr. Bell Ihua therefore called on authorities in Nigerian Tertiary Institutions to provide necessary guidelines on the conduct of staff, with a view to comporting themselves properly when discharging their respective duties.
Dr. Ihua further reiterated the fact that there should be thorough adherence to the set guidelines to derive the needed desire.
“They should be serious in handling allegations on rape and sexual abuses on campuses by thoroughly investigating cases tabled against the conduct of their staff and ensure victims are well protected and not victimized…”
He added that authorities in government must as well come to the aid of victims by showing commitment to end rape and sexual abuses through their reviewing of legislation on the scourge.
